What is an AI visibility audit?

An AI visibility audit measures how often your brand appears in the answers generated by large language models and AI-powered search platforms. Where a traditional SEO audit focuses on keyword rankings in a list of ten blue links, an AI visibility audit looks at the emerging layer above those links: the synthesised summaries, direct answers, and cited recommendations that AI systems serve to users before they ever scroll to organic results.

The audit covers four platforms that are reshaping how people discover brands and make purchase decisions: ChatGPT, Perplexity AI, Google Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. Each platform pulls from a different corpus of knowledge and applies different weighting logic, so your brand's visibility can vary significantly across them. A brand that ranks well on Perplexity may be almost invisible in Gemini. Without auditing each platform separately, you'd never know.

The key metrics the audit captures include:

  • Brand mention frequency: how often your brand name appears in AI-generated responses for queries relevant to your category
  • Sentiment analysis: whether AI platforms describe your brand in positive, neutral, or negative terms, and which specific attributes are emphasised
  • Citation frequency: how often your web pages are linked or referenced as sources inside AI answers, which is a proxy for how much AI systems trust your content
  • Competitor share of voice: a side-by-side comparison of how much space your brand occupies versus your direct competitors across the same queries on the same platforms

Together, these metrics give you a single, comparable benchmark: your AI Visibility Score. It's the starting point for any Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) strategy, and it's something that no traditional SEO tool currently measures.

How the live audit works

The audit runs through a short wizard directly in your browser. No account, no credit card, no installation. Here's what happens at each step:

  1. Enter your domain. Type or paste your website URL. This is the only input needed to kick off the analysis.
  2. We crawl your sitemap. Geology fetches and parses your sitemap automatically, building an index of your publicly available pages so the audit has accurate source material to work with.
  3. Competitors are detected. Using topic modelling and AI co-mention data, the system identifies the brands most likely to be competing with yours inside AI answers. You don't have to know your competitors in advance; we surface them for you.
  4. You confirm your competitors. Review the suggested list, remove anyone irrelevant, and add any others you want to benchmark against. You're in full control of who you're measured against.
  5. Select the pages to analyse. Choose the pages you care about most: your homepage, core product pages, and blog posts, or all of them. The more pages you include, the richer the citation analysis becomes.
  6. Enter your email. This is where you'll receive the full report. We don't use it for anything else.
  7. We run the live analysis. Geology queries ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews in parallel, records every brand mention, extracts citations, scores sentiment, and compiles a side-by-side competitor comparison. The complete report lands in your inbox within minutes.

What you'll learn from your report

The report is built around five core sections, each designed to answer a specific question about your brand's current standing in the AI layer.

  • AI Visibility Score. A single 0–100 score aggregated across all four platforms, weighted by query relevance and mention quality. It gives you a baseline to improve from and a number you can track over time.
  • Competitor Comparison. A side-by-side breakdown of your brand versus each competitor you selected, showing share of voice per platform and per query category. This section typically surfaces a clear gap: a platform where a competitor is consistently mentioned and you are not, giving you an immediate prioritisation signal.
  • Citation Analysis. A list of your pages that appeared as sources in AI-generated answers, along with a count of how often each page was cited and which platforms cited it. Pages with zero citations despite high relevance are candidates for content optimisation.
  • Sentiment Breakdown. For every brand mention found, the report scores the surrounding language as positive, neutral, or negative. It also highlights the descriptive phrases AI systems use most often for your brand, showing how you're being positioned, not just whether you're appearing.
  • Actionable Recommendations. The report closes with a prioritised list of improvements: which pages to update, which content gaps to fill, and which platforms to focus on first, based on where the biggest visibility gains are available.

Why AI visibility matters for your brand

Search behaviour is shifting. A growing share of users now conduct research, compare products, and make decisions entirely inside AI interfaces, without clicking through to a website at all. When someone asks ChatGPT which project management tool is best for a remote team, or asks Perplexity to recommend a B2B analytics platform, the brand mentioned in the answer gets the consideration. The brand that isn't mentioned doesn't.

The business consequences are material. Research from early adopters of GEO strategies shows that brands that appear in AI answers for high-intent queries see increased direct traffic, higher branded search volume, and shorter sales cycles. Prospects arrive already familiar with the brand from the AI recommendation. Conversely, brands that are invisible in AI platforms are ceding that awareness and consideration to competitors who have invested in the right content signals.

Unlike traditional SEO, AI visibility is not purely a function of domain authority or backlink volume. It rewards brands that have clear, structured, authoritative content on specific topics. A well-written explanation page, a detailed comparison guide, or a data-backed original study can push a brand into AI answers faster than years of link building. That means the window to establish a strong AI presence (before competitors do) is still open for many categories.
